Paint the City

There are hundreds of forest green utility boxes in public view on street corners around San Francisco. These boxes contain necessary electrical units for our traffic signals, but are also an opportune target for graffiti.

The City spends countless dollars and hours repainting these utility boxes, and simultaneously, it has become increasingly difficult for local artists to live in SF.

With funding from the Civic Joy Fund, Paint the City transformed 322 utility boxes across San Francisco with the help of 49 local artists, celebrating the diverse cultural fabric of the city. By commissioning local artists from their respective neighborhoods, the murals reflect the unique character and stories of our neighborhoods, enhancing the visual tapestry of San Francisco and leaving a lasting impact on its residents and visitors.
